What is the difference between a door lining and a door frame?
Door lining: three-sided timber frame lining a stud partition opening - door is hung directly onto the lining. Door frame: more substantial frame for masonry openings, includes a doorstop rebate the door closes against. Linings are used in internal stud partitions; frames in external or masonry openings.
What sizes do door linings come in?
Standard lining depths: 95 mm, 108 mm, 133 mm, or 145 mm to suit common wall thicknesses. Sold as sets (head + two jambs) pre-cut to the door opening size. The lining opening should be door size plus approximately 10 mm in each direction. Always specify the wall depth when ordering as linings are not universal.
How much architrave do I need per door?
For a standard single door (762-838 mm wide x 1981 mm high): approximately 5.2 m per side (two 2.1 m legs + one 1.0 m head). Both sides: approximately 10.4 m per door. Architrave is typically sold in 2.1 m or 4.2 m lengths. Remember to order for both faces of every doorway.
What is the standard door height and width in the UK?
Most common internal doors: 762 x 1981 mm (2'6" x 6'6") and 838 x 1981 mm (2'9" x 6'6"). Bathroom/WC doors: often 686 x 1981 mm. Modern metric sizes: 826 x 2040 mm and 726 x 2040 mm. Under Approved Document M (accessibility), minimum clear opening width for wheelchair users is 775 mm, requiring at least an 838 mm door.
What clearance should I leave around a door in its lining?
Sides and top: 2-3 mm clearance between door leaf and lining. Bottom: 6-10 mm over finished floor for air movement; 12-15 mm if a carpet threshold is needed. The lining opening should be door size plus 10 mm width and 10 mm height for fitting clearance, plus lining thickness on each side.
Do I need fire doors for internal doorways?
Under Approved Document B: fire doors required between an integral garage and the house (FD30 minimum); on doors onto a protected stairway in a 3-storey+ home. Converted flats and HMOs: more extensive requirements. Fire doors must have intumescent strips, cold smoke seals, self-closing devices, and certified fire door hardware.
