Calculate joist quantities, noggins and wall plates for flat roof construction. Includes BS 6229 fall requirements and building regulations guidance.
Divide the roof width by the joist spacing and add 1 for the end joist - for a 4 m wide roof at 400 mm centres, that is 11 joists. Each joist spans the full roof depth plus bearing onto wall plates at each end (minimum 75 mm bearing per side). Noggins are typically fitted at mid-span for joists over 2.5 m. Flat roof joists in the UK must be sized to span tables in Approved Document A or designed by a structural engineer. BS 6229 requires a minimum 1:80 fall across the finished roof surface to ensure drainage - our calculator includes firring piece quantities to achieve this fall where the structural joists are level.
