How many parquet blocks or panels do I need?

Divide the room area by the area of one block or panel to get the quantity, then add waste. A traditional UK parquet block is typically 230 x 70 mm, covering 0.0161 m² per block - a 20 m² room needs approximately 1,242 blocks before waste. For herringbone layouts, increase your waste allowance to 15-20% due to the angled cuts at room edges. Solid parquet blocks are glued directly to a screeded or concrete subfloor; panels and engineered parquet can be floated or glued. Allow a 48-72 hour acclimatisation period before laying to stabilise moisture content.

What subfloor do I need for parquet flooring?
Solid blocks: concrete or screed, flat to within 3 mm over 2 m, moisture content below 75% RH before laying. Timber floors need minimum 18-22 mm plywood overlay. Engineered parquet can be floated on most sound subfloors. Never lay parquet directly onto chipboard without a plywood overlay.
How long does parquet flooring need to acclimatise?
Solid blocks: minimum 7-14 days in the room in open stacks at normal living temperature (18-20°C) and humidity (45-65% RH). Engineered parquet: 48-72 hours. Insufficient acclimatisation causes boards to gap in dry conditions or lift if laid too dry.
What waste allowance should I use for parquet flooring?
Simple room, brick bond or basket weave: 10%. Herringbone patterns: 15%. Complex rooms with alcoves and chimney breasts: 15-20%. Solid blocks vary in colour between batches - buy all from the same batch and keep a small surplus for future repairs.
