At 400 mm centres: divide wall length by 0.4 and add 1 for the end stud. At 600 mm centres: divide by 0.6 and add 1. Add extra studs for each door opening (2 trimmers + 1 king stud per side). A 3 m wall at 400 mm centres needs approximately 9 studs including end posts.
What size timber should I use for a stud wall?
Standard internal partitions use 47 x 100 mm C16 regularised timber. For loadbearing walls or heights over 2.7 m, use 47 x 125 mm or 47 x 150 mm. Noggins are cut from the same section and fitted at mid-height or maximum 1.2 m intervals.
What is the standard stud spacing for a timber stud wall?
Standard spacings are 400 mm centres (stiffer, better for tiled or heavy finishes) and 600 mm centres (more economical, suits standard plasterboard). Stud spacing should align with the sheet edges of the plasterboard being used.
Do I need Building Regulations approval for a stud wall?
Approval is generally required if the wall is loadbearing, creates a habitable room, affects fire compartmentation, or alters sound insulation between dwellings. Non-loadbearing partitions within a single dwelling typically don't require approval. Party walls must meet Part E (minimum 45 dB Rw sound reduction).
How much timber do I need for a stud wall per square metre?
At 600 mm centres with a single noggin row: approximately 4-5 lm per m² including studs, plates and noggins with 10% waste. At 400 mm centres: approximately 5-6 lm per m². Use the calculator above for an exact breakdown for your wall dimensions.
What is the difference between a loadbearing and non-loadbearing stud wall?
A loadbearing wall supports floors, roofs or other walls above and requires larger timber sections and structural design - do not remove without structural calculations. A non-loadbearing partition carries only its own weight. If in doubt, consult a structural engineer before modifying any wall.
